Family Cemetery Records
Cemetery records include online and paper documents, and
headstones. Usually there is an image of the original record or headstone
(JPG) and a text transcription (TXT). The files are named by
Last Name, First Name, and a short description. For
example, GillespieVictorVaughn-Headstone.jpg. The
name will be the name at the time of burial (usually the married name
for women).
Notes:
- Cemetery records are provided to the cemetery by the next of
kin responsible for the burial. They may recall incorrectly or the
cemetery clerk may make a mistake taking down the information or
typing it. For online sources, there may be similar transcription
errors. It may be hard to get access to the original paper record
for verification.
- Similarly for headstones, there may be errors
unknown to or overlooked by
the next-of-kin.
- A headstone may have been placed at the time of burial, or
much later by surviving kin.
- Handwriting is often hard to interpret. You may have to refer
to Handwriting Samples,
and compare writings on the same page.
- The date on picture or image files is the date the picture was
taken if by digital camera, or the date it was scanned for older
pictures.
