Cemetery Records and Headstone Pictures
Cemetery records include online and paper documents, and
headstone pictures (Also see Notes).
Usually there is an image of the original record or headstone
(JPG) and a text transcription of each (TXT). The files are named by
the convention Last Name, First Name, and a short description. The
name will be the name at the time of burial (usually married name
for women).
- Chapel of the Chimes, Oakland, Alameda County, California
- Holly Cross Cemetery, Antioch, Contra Costa County, California
- Saint Joseph's Cemetery, San Pablo, Contra Costa County,
California
- Saint Mary's Cemetery, Oakland, Alameda County, California
Notes:
- Cemetery records are provided to the cemetery by the next of
kin responsible for the burial. They may recall incorrectly or
the cemetery clerk may make a mistake taking down the
information or typing it. For online sources, there may be
transcription errors. It may be hard to get a look at the
original paper record.
- Similarly for headstones, there may be errors overlooked by
the next-of-kin.
- A headstone may have been placed at the time of burial, or
much later by surviving kin.
- Handwriting is often hard to interpret. You may have to refer
to Handwriting Samples,
and compare writings on the same page. Or read
Poor Penmanship.
- The date on a picture or image file is the date the picture was
taken if by digital camera, or the date it was scanned for older
pictures. To get the original cemetery pictures see
Cemetery Files or
Cemetery
Picture Gallery.
